About Us

   As you may have guessed by now, the suspicious looking character on your right is the owner. Unfortunately, this was the best pictures that we could find.

   Why did we start Happy House? Well, the first thing you should know about us is that I met my partner back in 1998 at a guest house in Tokyo. Although we have very good memories of our time together at the house, we did notice a few interesting things. For one, the price was a little high for what we were getting. Also, the owner didn't seem too concerned about whom she was letting in. This lead to us having to share space with some rather suspicious characters. And finally, although the managers were nice enough, they weren't very good at dealing with foreigners.

   With all of these things running through our minds, we realized that we could do a better job of it ourselves. So four years later, we decided to take the plunge. Looking back, that fateful decision in 2002 was the best thing we could have done. It gave us the chance to meet hundreds of interesting people, develop long lasting friendships with dozens of them, and wake up every morning knowing that we are in the process of creating a living, breathing community.

   To be perfectly honest, it isn't us, but you, that make the community what it is. We just hope that our efforts in creating the right living conditions are a step in the right direction.
